Distillery Water Filtration

t is vital in distilleries or breweries to have total control over your water supply. Contaminants are particulates in the supply can have a big effect on the final product, so it is important to know what is going in, identify any problematic contaminants and then take them out.

Common particulates found in water that are undesirable for the final distilled alcohol or brewed beer include chlorine, chloramine, manganese, tannin, nitrate, sodium, sulfates and TDS (total dissolved solids).

Safe Water Storage

A comprehensive approach to food safety is absolutely vital when it comes to water for distillery industry operations. Using food-grade materials such as stainless steel 312, along with disinfected, purified cleaning water, can ensure operations are suitable for processing water for filtration and purification.


A prechlorination stage can ensure that your feed water is disinfected and clear of parasites, bacteria, and viruses. This is vital for making sure the final product is healthy and safe for human consumption. Chlorine does need removing later on in the process.

DI Resin

Deionisation is the process of removing impurities and contaminants from the water through the process of targeting ions with positively/negatively charged cations/anions to remove the impurities on a clinical level. After being passed through the DI resin stage, water is potable but not pure enough for food & beverage operations, and requires further processing before its use.


Once the chlorine has disinfected the water, the remnants contaminate the water supply and lead to a lower quality product with an inferior taste.  The dechlorination stage will remove this and bring it to acceptable levels before the final two stages of filtration.

Reverse Osmosis System

The process of reverse osmosis involves passing contaminated feed water through a semi-permeable membrane, separating pure water from the feed. This results in a supply of pure water coming out of the other end, and a ratio of contaminated water being passed out as the wastewater run-off. This is a comprehensive method of water filtration, and often the resulting water at this stage is ready for use in distilling procedures.

UV Water Steriliser

The final stage of the process is UV sterilisation. This stage, ensures that the water that has been filtered throughout all the stages is more than clean enough for any food & beverage industry applications. With the final stage, the microbial contaminants have been removed, making it safe for cleaning machines and equipment, and providing basic pure water for any process needs.


Mineral compounds have an effect on the flavour of the final product – often resulting in a more preferable flavour profile. This is why some distilled beverages require a remineralisation stage to complete the quality of the final product.
